About Clergy Sexual Abuse

Connecticut Clergy sexual abuse involves the sexual abuse or exploitation of a minor or vulnerable adult. Reports of credibly accused diocesan priests continue as more and more adults find the confidence to come forward. Whether a victim of aggravated assault or sexual misconduct, a clergy lawsuit helps survivors build a case supporting their accusations.

Accused religious order priests give the Catholic Church a bad reputation and leave their victims suffering from the emotional consequences of sexual abuse. Connecticut has legal systems in place to ensure these abusive priests are removed from ministry and charged both civilly and criminally.

When you report sexual abuse, you take a step toward serving justice. The credibly accused may be removed from ministry, helping to protect future children. They may also be required to report to the sex offender registry. Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers offers legal support services to Connecticut survivors by helping them press criminal charges, build a civil claim, and work hard to seek justice.

Laws and Regulations in Connecticut

Taking advantage of civil and criminal laws is the best way to combat the trend of sexual abuse occurring in the church. Senate Bill 3 was passed in 2019 to expand legal rights to victims of sexual assault and violence. The legislation extends the timeline for filing child sexual abuse civil claims.

The bill also gets rid of time limits altogether for criminal sexual offenses, including sexual abuse or sexual exploitation, involving minors under the age of 16 years. Victims over the age of 16 years at the time of sexual misconduct or abuse must report the crime by their 51st birthday.

Currently, in Connecticut, there are no time limits on civil claims involving first-degree sexual assault. Otherwise, sexual assault victims also have until their 51st birthday to file civil claims against a person or diocese accused of sexual abuse.

Filing a Clergy Sexual Abuse Lawsuit in Connecticut

A civil lawsuit helps survivors of sexual abuse receive the financial support they need to recover and move on from the trauma inflicted. Here is what you can expect from a sexual abuse lawsuit in Connecticut:

  1. Schedule a Free Consultation – Scheduling a free, confidential consultation with a Connecticut clergy sexual abuse lawyer helps you explore your reporting and legal options.
  2. Collect Evidence – Connecticut courts require proof of abuse. Our law firm will conduct an investigation into those credibly accused of sexual abuse. Negligence is the foundation for many Catholic Church lawsuits, alleging that clergy members covered up the sexual abuse or ignored it altogether.
  3. File a Report – All allegations and accused clergy members must undergo a Diocese Review Board investigation, which can lead to a settlement offer.
  4. Review Settlement Offer/Prepare for Trial – Even if you don’t receive a settlement offer, you may still have legal options available. Our law firm has in-depth trial experience that can help victims prepare for and manage trials.

File a lawsuit against the church, clergy member, or priest responsible for your pain and suffering.

Support Services for Survivors in Connecticut

Many child sex abuse survivors don’t report priest abuse until many decades later. However, even if it has been many years since the alleged sexual abuse, support services may be a necessary part of your healing process. Connecticut survivors have access to many great support services, including the following:

  • Survivors Network of Those Abused By Priests: Connecticut has numerous locations where priest abuse survivors can seek support and connect.
  • Connecticut Alliance To End Sexual Violence: The Connecticut Alliance aims to end sexual abuse. 24/7 support is available at 1-888-999-5545.
  • Sexual Assault Crisis Service – A crisis center is available in Guilford, Connecticut, which offers support group services to adult victims.
  • Diocese of Bridgeport, CT: The Diocese of Bridgeport offers support services in the form of a referral for those impacted by sexual abuse in the church.

Seeking legal support can also help victims explore criminal statutes and lawsuit options for seeking justice.

Notable Cases and Outcomes in Connecticut

Many Connecticut priests and clergy members have paid settlements to victims of sexual abuse spanning over decades. The claims settled by dioceses involve abuse cases most frequently.

As a result of frequent settlement payments, at least one Connecticut diocese, the Diocese of Norwich, has been forced to file for bankruptcy.

Many Catholic religious organizations in Connecticut have been or are currently involved in lawsuits, including the Hartford Archdiocese, the Bridgeport CT diocese, and the Norwich Diocese. Priests listed for allegedly sexually abusing children include locations all throughout Connecticut.

The attorneys at Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers have reviewed public and private settlement data related to Connecticut clergy abuse settlements. Depending on your case, it’s not uncommon for clergy lawsuits to be in the $400,000 to $950,000 range. In cases of extreme conduct or cases taken in front of a jury, damages could exceed $1 million.

– Michonne Proulx

Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own.

This lawyer really helped me get compensation for my motorcycle accident case. I know there is no way that I could have gotten anywhere near the amount that Mr. Rosenfeld was able to get to settle my case. Thank you.

Jonathan did a great job helping my family navigate through a lengthy lawsuit involving my grandmother’s death in a nursing home. Through every step of the case, Jonathan kept my family informed of the progression of the case. Although our case eventually settled at a mediation, I really was impressed at how well prepared Jonathan was to take the case to trial.
